Only available in this country since 2013, Abates are in season from September through April. Their russet coloration over a yellow or green background, flask-like shape and elongated neck give them a distinctive appearance. Abates white, aromatic flesh is very high in sugar and prized for its sweetness, juiciness and nutritional value. Abates can only be harvested at a particular stage of maturity, and can only be sold when they achieve a specific sugar content.
